Why do I lead? Why did I step into the role as "Lead Learner" in my department? These are two questions that I've been pondering for the last week. To be honest, the idea of being a leader is still new to me. For so long, it's been something on a pedestal, something to which I was aspiring to be.
Now that I've become a school administrator, I still struggle with the desire to be "in the classroom". It wasn't until last week, that I realized that I can still be a teacher. I am still a teacher. Only, my classroom is the entire high school department rather than the four walls of a traditional classroom.
As lead learner, I have the opportunity to do just that: Lead in Learning - for our students AND our staff. I can't expect our staff to step out of their comfort zones, to stretch and grow their knowledge base, and to reach outside of our building for growth opportunities unless, I too am willing to do the same.
Why do I lead? Why am I "Lead Learner"? - for the betterment of our students and staff. To invest, encourage, and provide the opportunity for all of us to grow, no matter our role or job title. To listen. To provide feedback. To ask questions. To press the boundaries. Doing this while keeping in mind that it's for our students that we are here and it is to their needs that we must focus.
